As West Virginia's first-ever charter school, West Virginia Academy has a mission to not only provide a great education to its students, but to also contribute its voice to impacting education policy in the state of West Virginia. Whether its leading through a unique on-campus dual-enrollment program for high school students, providing middle school students with the state's only international baccalaureate MYP program, or giving elementary students their first opportunity to be a part of an integrated direct instruction program, West Virginia Academy is truly a trailblazer in every way.

WVA Board Chair John Treu recently joined WAJR's Talk of the Town to discuss the great things going on at WVA as well as policy changes that could strengthen charter schools and school choice in West Virginia. Mike Nolting published an article with MetroNews from that interview as follows:

WVA founders John & Heidi Treu also prepared a presentation ahead of this year's legislative session for policy makers providing solutions to address some of the major concerns for charter schools including the significant funding gap between charter schools and traditional public schools as well as encroachment on charter school autonomy. The video of that 14-minute presentation is available here:

The presentation proposes several opportunities for improvement to the charter laws and funding of charter schools. These recommendations were provided to policy makers ahead of the current legislative session. Also, on February 21, 2025, WVA Board Chair John Treu will be presenting in Charleston before the West Virginia House of Delegates Educational Choice Subcommittee. As West Virginians, we are fortunate to have a legislature that truly cares about innovation in education and that wants to get it right for our children and give parents choices.
