West Virginia Academy's Individualized Approach
West Virginia Academy (WVA) was founded on the premise that there is not a one size fits all approach when it comes to education.
So what makes our school different from the rest?
WVA Primary School
Pre-K through 6th grade
At WVA, we ensure students are reaching mastery at their level, whether that is behind their grade-level or ahead. If a student is clearly capable and ready, we accelerate them to challenge them academically, provide additional growth opportunities, and achieve their goals faster.
We do not believe that students fit in a grade-level box.
STEPS: Supplemental Tiered Education Program
How do we do this?
In our primary school, our mornings are dedicated to the three R’s, reading, writing, and arithmetic, but the students attend a class that provides the material they need presented at their ideal pace to progress in the most efficient way. Grade-level content is provided in the afternoons, as well as science, history, and the arts
Transition: 6th Grade
At WVA, we provide our 6th grader with a unique learning experience. This is a critical time, where scholars must master all the fundamental basics in order to truly master the following programs. Students still get the benefit of leveled learning in the mornings; however, they also get the expertise and challenge of the secondary courses in science, history, health, Latin, art and music. They participate in secondary sports and have a voice in student government. It is a perfect blend of primary basics and secondary standards.
WVA's IB MYP Program
7th through 9th grade
At the secondary level, our students are challenged in the the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP). This curriculum provides our students with an interdisciplinary approach to learning where everything presented in a global perspective. Scholars are challenged to establish their own thoughts and opinions through studying history, cultures, literature, arts, and philosophies. They are able to discuss these opinions with knowledge and respect for others.
Transition: 9th Grade
As WVA scholars progress to their high school years, they complete their MYP program with a culminating personal project, requiring them to search a topic they are passionate about and exploring that area through research, volunteering, and ultimately teaching what they have experienced to others.
WVA High School
10th through 12th Grade
In the final years at West Virginia Academy, students are encouraged to start their post-secondary education, whether that is through college courses on campus, or internships in their career of choice. An advisor, individually, meets and guides our scholars through the path that they choose to give them the best trajectory post-high school.
